This posting is to establish an eligibility list for future permanent or temporary positions which may be full-time or part-time.

There is currently a part time (0.8 6 FTE, 56 hours biweekly) permanent position available. The expected start date for this position is August 1, 2021.

Under the Public Service Labour Relations Act, this position is excluded from union membership.

The Supreme Court of British Columbia is the province’s superior trial court. It hears civil, family and criminal cases,

appeals from the Provincial Court and reviews the decisions of certain administrative tribunals.

Reporting to the federally-appointed Chief Justice, Associate Chief Justice and the Executive Director and Senior Counsel, the Legal Counsel acts as both a legal advisor to and representative of the Chief Justice and Associate Chief Justice, and as in-house counsel for the Supreme Court’s judges, masters, registrars and judicial administration staff. The Legal Counsel provides legal opinions and background information necessary for policy planning and administration of the Court, its internal committees and its programs. The Legal Counsel is also responsible for overseeing the Law Clerk Program in conjunction with the Court of Appeal Legal Counsel.

Job Requirements:

In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

- Degree in law from a recognized university

- Membership in good standing or eligibility to join the Law Society of British Columbia

- Engaged in active legal practice for 1-5 years of call.

- Experience in Supreme Court practices and procedures

- Experience in providing advice and preparing opinions on a variety of complex legal matters

- Experience in presentation of legal information to legal and lay audiences

- Preference may be given to those who have demonstrated criminal law experience

- Preference may be given to those who read and write French

NOTE:  Lawyers with excess of 5 years of call to the bar will not be considered.
