Commercial Underwriting provides a high level of expertise in the administration of HTC’s commercial mortgage underwriting business. It is responsible for the origination and administration of new and existing loans and for ensuring the adherence of commercial credit policy, standards and guidelines, while fostering a culture of respect, trust and integrity.



Position Responsibilities





Risk and Compliance (30%)



Review, analyse and verify mortgage applications for completeness, accuracy, suitability and risk to ensure compliance with all aspects of Home Trust Company’s underwriting policies, procedures and guidelines per delegated authority matrices



Adhere to applicable compliance obligations including Privacy, Anti-Money Laundering/Anti-Terrorist Financing and internal  Anti-Fraud Policy requirements must remain the over-arching focus in carrying out one’s responsibilities



File Unusual Transaction Reports as applicable to fulfil individual employee obligations to detect and deter financial crimes activity.



Maintain consistent, objective and sound risk assessments in a high volume, service-oriented environment





Operational Excellence/File Management (50%)



Underwrite and analyze applications while reviewing data for integrity and accuracy



Complete underwriting analysis of commercial mortgage transactions for multi-residential, non-residential and construction facilities including detailed analysis of the borrower, real estate security and loan terms as well as identifying any associated risks



Prepare and issue conditional mortgage commitments outlining all conditions that must be met to Home Trust’s satisfaction and according to negotiated and approved terms



On every transaction, review, assess suitability, risks & complete due diligence requirements, and adjudicate commercial mortgage transactions in accordance with Home Trust’s risk appetite using appropriate level of delegated lending authority for decisions



Maintain clean OSFI and Internal Audit reports



Provide guidance and decision making to support the origination teams to solve problems



Manage and remediate all internal audit and other audit findings as required



Maintain a pipeline of all transactions and a list & file of all transactions amended or declined or approved



Complete the approval and underwriting of files assessed within the target amount of time



Complete the underwriting of approved commercial mortgages maintaining level of quality and standards required by Home being accurate and complete and providing sound risk assessments with files well documented following Home’s policies, guidelines and procedures and meeting Home’s post-funding (i.e. closing documentation) and ERM quality assurance requirements



Ensure the information recorded in the SAM system for all commercial mortgages is consistently accurate and complete





Communication (20%)



Adhere to defined Service Level Agreement in acknowledging applications and following up on additional required information;



Work effectively with all internal business partners to improve underwriting systems to maximize effectiveness and achieve excellence;



Remain current on latest developments within industry and market trends to secure competitive advantage



Formal Education



- Post secondary degree or diploma required (University degree preferred) in related area

- Certification(s)/Designation(s) preferred



Related Experience



Related Experience:

• 3-5 years with mortgage lending

• Strong understanding of commercial mortgage products

• Proficient in adjudicating credit, reviewing and assessing third party reports
