Board Member – New Westminster Utility Commission

Public Service Appointment Opportunity

The City of New Westminster is seeking interest from the public to serve on the City of New Westminster’s Utility

Board. New Board members are appointed to an initial 3 year term with the possibility of an extension. This is a

public service opportunity and is an Order in Council appointment.

Our Utility purchases and distributes energy to 36899 residential and commercial customers within City boundaries

utilizing two 69 KV substations with a capacity of 155mVA. In Addition, the Utility provides billing, collection,

customer service functions, and constructs and maintenance of the distribution system.

With thirty employees and

revenues of $51M, the Utility enjoys a reputation for innovation, leadership and excellent employee relations.

Under the policy direction of City Council, the Board of Commissioners oversees and guides the management of the

Utility, which includes the dark fibre network, with a focus on the strategic priorities of Customer Experience;

Operational Excellence; Innovation in alternative energy and energy conservation; and Financial Sustainability &

Stewardship. In addition, the Board ensures compliance with legal and regulatory requirements; assesses

management performance; represents and advocates for the Utility and supports an atmosphere that contributes to

the success of the Utility.

Candidates will have an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a member of a board and have the necessary

experience and demonstrated skills to enable them to contribute to board decision-making and oversight. Preferred

candidates will possess the education and experience with an understanding of legal; business; financial; regulatory

and customer service issues typically gained through a senior managerial role. It is considered an asset if candidates

possess experience in utility work; energy; public policy; dark fibre networks; and innovation in alternate forms of


Consideration will be given to qualified individuals with a broad range of backgrounds in community, labour and

business environments. The selection process will recognize lived experience and volunteer roles as well as paid

employment and academic achievements. Past experience serving as a board member is considered an asset.
