Safety / Quality Manager

The Safety / Quality Manager is responsible for all activities related to occupational safety and health in the facility and ensures compliance with Provincial laws to prevent hazards and injuries. The role also focuses on quality, compliance, excellent customer service and continuous improvement activities to drive a quality culture and reduce quality costs in line with WestRock and industry recognized best practice procedures. There are no direct reports to this position but the incumbent works very closely with all employees at the Plant and provides on-going training and mentoring.

How you will impact WestRock:


- Develop and maintain safety education training program within the plant environment

- Ensure that safety audits are completed in a timely manner

- Maintain and update existing safety procedures, standard operating procedures, and policies

- Provide critical information and documentation to 3rd party auditors as necessary

- Manage compliance for environmental regulations (e.g. air permits, water runoff)

- Assist in the continuous improvement of hazard identification and risk assessment

- Ensure compliance with safety policies, regulations, and reporting in manufacturing

- Perform hazardous risk assessments for tasks or jobs to identify potential hazards and develop risk prevention plans to mitigate them

- Perform accident investigations

- Review and analyze accident/injury reports and data for accuracy and detail, ensuring corrective actions are taken

- Management member of the JHSC

- Serve as primary point of contact for worker’s compensation and general liability insurance end-to-end processes

- Model and promote an organizational culture that fosters safe practices through effective leadership and training

- Partner with manufacturing managers to review and improve safety practices and ensure adoption by employees

- Manage the WestRock Environmental Program and their respecting audits


- Review, approve, and execute facility and corporate standard operating procedures for site implementation

- Coordinate and execute internal, customer, supplier, subcontractor, and regulatory audits

- Monitor and ensure compliance with current policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and customer requirements

- Coordinate and execute investigation of detected risks or failures, complaints, and corrective/preventative actions

- Work closely with production managers to maximize product quality and reliability and minimize cost

- Track, analyze, and lead initiatives for all internal quality and customer complaint issues

- Determine, document, and approve site-specific or one-time occurrences such as protocols (reworks, validations, etc.), deviations (planned or unplanned), waivers, or releases for materials and products as required

- Leverage enterprise technology to analyze quality complaints, track corrective and preventive actions, and use data to isolate and track defective parts per million, over shipments, and resolve issues related to rejected products when applicable

- Execute facility improvement initiatives as determined from performance data

- Lead team of quality technicians and Safe Quality Foods (SQF) readiness resources, ensuring that processes are efficient, and work is appropriately prioritized

- Provide tools and training for quality management and quality improvement to the facility staff

What you need to succeed:

- Minimum 5 years in a Safety or Quality role as a leader or an equivalent combination of education and experience

- Thorough knowledge of provincial safety regulations

- Safety related certification(s)

- Willingness to obtain further training and certifications

- Project management and problem-solving skills such as Six Sigma or any other recognized business improvement techniques/systems is preferred

- Experience in manufacturing/production environment ideally in the corrugated business

- Ability to coach, train, and correct employees

- Ability to carry root cause analysis and use problem-solving techniques to resolve issues

- Competent in using Microsoft Office suite and other manufacturing software
