provided programs and services to teens and young adults living in low-income neighbourhoods in Toronto’s

West-end. Our goal is to end youth poverty by empowering youth with the tools they need to get ahead.

Some of the tools we provide are:

- Exposure and access to academic, employment, leadership and mentorship opportunities within and

outside of the community;

- Settlement and integration services for newcomer youth and their families;

- Advocacy and representation for youth in conflict with the law to find alternatives to incarceration, and

support reintegration back into school and/or work, and

- Training and mentorship for young leaders who want to start their own initiatives to create change in their

communities, bringing with them diverse experiences and expertise from varied disciplines.

Serving as a member of the Board of Directors provides you with the opportunity to:

- Give back

- Collaborate and network with a team of committed and engaged community leaders

- Contribute your skills and expertise to helping FYI grow and develop

- Advocate for and with young people and the communities they call home

Board Member Responsibilities & Duties

To understand and support the vision and mission of the organization

- To promote the goals, programs and services of FYI

- To attend monthly board meetings on a regular and consistent basis

- To prepare for and participate in board committee meetings

- To maintain active participation in the affairs of the organization including membership in at least one

Board subcommittee, attending the Annual General Meeting and supporting fundraising and advocacy


- To commit to 2-3 hours for board meetings on alternating months (6 meetings per year)

- To commit to 1-2 hours for subcommittee meetings on alternating months (up to 6 meetings per year)

Time Period

December 2020 - September 2023 with the option for re-election for another 3-year term

Selection Criteria

Priority will go to candidates who:

o Are currently work/are experienced in one or more of the following fields: education (highschool or

post-secondary), employment, criminal law, justice, media/public relations, advocacy, public policy,

governance, or human resources

o Are living and/or working in York South-Weston (Ward 5)

o Identify as Black, racialized and/or a newcomer/immigrant

Selection Process

- Interviews will be held in September + October; applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so apply


- Selected candidates will be expected to attend a virtual Board Meeting in November and an Annual General

Meeting in December 2020 (date TBD)
