Position Overview

The Office of Research Services within the Vice-President Research portfolio is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Research Ethics Analyst for approximately 12 months.

Reporting to the Manager, Research Ethics and Compliance, the Research Ethics Analysts (REAs) work to facilitate review of ethics applications for the Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (CHREB) and the Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board (CFREB). As a key member of an integrated ethics administration team, this REA position focuses primarily on processing modifications as well as the review of all serious adverse events, protocol deviations/violations, and all other safety monitoring documents (for both the CHREB and CFREB).

The REA will summarize the requests and highlight issues and/or concerning trends that may require particular attention by the Chair and Board members. The REA is responsible for follow-up with researchers and study coordinators for clarification as needed and will ensure that follow-up is prioritized in a timely fashion, while maintaining accurate records.

The duties of this position are diverse and can be complex, requiring significant independent work and decision-making within a team environment. There are high volumes of work, and frequent periods of conflicting timelines and priorities. Well-developed organizational skills are required to manage the volume of applications and associated inquiries. Peak periods may involve additional hours to manage the workload.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Works with the Board Chair to determine the appropriate routing of ethics applications (full versus delegated Board review)

Advises on process, issues, and policies related to human research ethics and assists in researching and developing procedures and guidelines for use by the REBs, administrators and researchers

Contributes to the preparation, delivery and distribution of educational resources and materials to colleagues, researchers and REB members

Ensures the timely and judicious review of both CFREB and CHREB applications with a specific focus on modifications and reportable events

Responsible for initial review and processing of SAE and protocol violation reports

Carries out all follow-up activities with applicants

Prepares correspondence resulting from Chair/Board decisions on appropriate ethics applications

Nurtures and maintains productive relationships within the University, external agencies and the general public

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications / Requirements:

University degree required, graduate degree preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

2-5 years of relevant job experience in an applied health or clinical research environment is an asset

Established familiarity with the Health Canada Federal Drug Agency, US (HC FDA) Division 5 Regulations, International Conference on Harmonisation of technical requirements for registration of pharmaceuticals for human use - Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP) guidelines and Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS2) is an asset

Knowledge of policies and procedures for research involving human participants is an asset

Sound understanding of human research ethics boards and the pertinent regulatory bodies

Strong customer service skills, with demonstrated problem solving ability and a keen eye for detail

Ability to simultaneously manage a diverse range of complex projects and activities

Strong administration skills, including computing and organizational skills

Ability to understand complex and esoteric issues and analyze/integrate information

Well-developed oral, written and interpersonal skills combined with the ability to work effectively/advise individuals at all levels of the organization
