Description: This course explores the origins of the Yugoslav Civil Wars in the 1990s and the breakup of the federation into seven countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Slovenia and North Macedonia.
The class begins on the 1804 Serbian uprising against the Ottoman authorities, and finishes on Slobodan Milosevics ousting in 2000.
It focuses on the tension between the multiethnic/cosmopolitan vs. ethnic/national projects, or in other words, on the creation and dismantlement of empires, federations and nation-states in this area formerly known as Yugoslavia.
