Department: Cancer Genomics Research Program
Reports to: Principal Investigator

University Health Network (UHN) is looking for an experienced professional to fill the key role of Post Doctoral Fellow in our  Cancer Genomics Research Program.

Transforming lives and communities through excellence in care, discovery and learning.

The University Health Network, where “above all else the needs of patients come first”, encompasses Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and the Michener Institute of Education at UHN. The breadth of research,

the complexity of the cases treated, and the magnitude of its educational enterprise has made UHN a national and international resource for patient care, research and education. With a long tradition of groundbreaking firsts and a purpose of “Transforming lives and communities through excellence in care, discovery and learning”, the University Health Network (UHN), Canada’s largest research teaching hospital, brings together over 16,000 employees, more than 1,200 physicians, 8,000+ students, and many volunteers. UHN is a caring, creative place where amazing people are amazing the world.

University Health Network (UHN) is a research hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto and a member of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network. The scope of research and complexity of cases at UHN have made it a national and international source for discovery, education and patient care. Research across UHN's five research institutes spans the full spectrum of diseases and disciplines, including cancer, cardiovascular sciences, transplantation, neural and sensory sciences, musculoskeletal health, rehabilitation sciences, and community and population health. Find out about our purpose, values and principles here.

Postdoctoral fellowships are available in the laboratory of Dr. Trevor Pugh, PhD, with joint supervision by Dr. Amit Oza, MD and Dr. Stephanie Lheureux, MD at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre / University Health Network in Toronto, Canada. Located in the MaRS Centre in the heart of the downtown Discovery District, we are an integral component of multiple translational genomics projects and platforms including the Cancer Genomics Program, Tumour Immunotherapy Program, Princess Margaret Genomics Centre, and the Translational Genomics Laboratory, a joint initiative with the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research. These positions will support fellows wishing to lead collaborative projects in clinically-oriented ovarian cancer genomics.

This is an opportunity for a scientifically creative, computationally-inclined individuals with a strong cancer biology background to further our understanding of oncogenic mechanisms active in ovarian cancer and to evaluate molecular features of treatment response and resistance. As the largest gynecologic site group in Canada we have privileged access to specimens from trial participants through many cutting-edge clinical trials. This rare access enables the in-depth examination of biology as well as genomic biomarkers and mechanisms of both response and resistance to therapy.

Fellows will gain experience integrating multiple types of next-generation sequencing data (single cell seq, targeted panels, exome, genome, transcriptome, epigenome, circulating DNA) through analysis of tissue and blood collected before during and after clinical trials. Key to these projects are training to interpret these data in the context of emerging new genomics and machine-learning technologies, rich clinical annotations, tumour models and high-throughput screening data, public large-scale cancer and single cell data sets, and significant data sharing and high-performance computing infrastructure.

 Candidates must have:

a PhD or MD with specialization in genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or computer science as well as hands-on experience in the use of Unix/Linux, R/Matlab, and statistical approaches to analyze and visualize genome-scale data sets. Preferred but not required is knowledge and expertise in Ovarian or other related cancer-types, and expertise using tools for analyzing next-generation sequencing data such as the Genome Analysis Toolkit, the Picard suite of tools, and mutation detection algorithms. Candidates must be highly motivated, possess excellent organizational, problem-solving and communication skills (both verbal and written), and should have prior publications in cancer, genomics, immunology, and/or biomedical journals.

If you are interested in making your contribution at UHN, please apply on-line. You will be asked to copy and paste as well as attach your resume and covering letter. You will also be required to complete some initial screening questions.
