Overview

As a member of the military, Signal Operators provide reliable wired and wireless communications and information systems using leading edge voice and data systems. They are part of a larger team that provides Army units and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with communications and information services throughout Canada and around the world.

Signal Operators expertly install, troubleshoot, operate, and maintain communications and information systems technology such as:

- Wired and Wireless communications and information systems
- Radio, satellite, and microwave broadband systems




- Fibre optic and copper wire broadband technology
- Voice and data systems

Work environment

Signal Operators work outdoors, in military vehicles, and temporary shelters (e.g., tents). They serve across Canada and internationally wherever the CAF operates. Depending on whether you join the Regular or Primary Reserve Force, your postings and commitments will vary.

Entry requirements

- No prior work experience or specific skills required; recruiters will assess suitability based on personal interests and attributes.
- Minimum education: Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec, including Grade 10 Applied Math. Foreign education may be accepted.

Training

Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and specialized training at the Canadian Forces School of Communication and Electronics in Kingston, Ontario, lasting approximately 19 weeks. Training covers communication security, tactical systems, radio, satellite, and microwave communications, among others.





Opportunities for advanced training include cryptography, advanced satellite communications, microwave systems, and leadership courses.

Part-time options

Available for the Primary Reserve at various locations. Reservists serve part-time, typically one night per week and some weekends, with options for full-time employment or deployment. They are paid at 92.8% of Regular Force pay, receive benefits, and contribute to a pension plan.
